The wire rod purchased from steel mills is typically 5.5-16mm thick. The process of drawing wire from wire rod into steel wire for specific products requires a wire drawing machine. Thicker wire rods require an inverted wire drawing machine; a pulley-type wire drawing machine is simpler, more economical, and less demanding; while a straight-line wire drawing machine is needed for products requiring higher precision and quality. This article describes the process of drawing low-carbon steel wire using a straight-line wire drawing machine.

Before entering the straight-line wire drawing machine, the wire rod needs to be derusted. Generally, a descaling machine and a belt polishing machine are used. The choice can be made according to the condition of the wire rod. If there is very little rust, a simple polishing machine can also achieve the purpose.

After rust removal, the wire rod can enter the wire drawing process. If it is a thicker wire rod, it is best to set it to pulley mode during the first drawing process. This can increase physical buffering, prevent the metal wire from breaking, and enhance the rust removal effect.
The reduction rate varies for each drawing pass, but our machines guarantee a reduction rate of over 20%. For example, to obtain a 3.0mm wire from a 6.5mm wire rod, six passes are required: 6.5-5.8-5.0-4.3-3.8-3.4-3.0. Different input lines correspond to different processes and need to be designed according to the actual needs of customers. Generally, dry wire drawing machines can produce metal wires with a minimum diameter of 1.2mm.

After the wire is drawn to the required diameter, it enters the take-up process. Take-up machines can be broadly classified into three types: I-spool take-up machines, hydraulic tension take-up machines, and elephant trunk take-up machines. I-spool take-up machines have a spool and are suitable for general-purpose standardized production lines. Hydraulic tension take-up machines are suitable for operations with high requirements for wire laying quality and take-up tension. Elephant trunk take-up machines have the advantage of being able to achieve ultra-large winding weights, resulting in higher production efficiency.

The final products can be packaged and shipped, or they can undergo subsequent processes such as galvanizing, annealing, plastic coating, and mesh weaving.
